Cardiff by the Sea
The Rail Trail
A clean up and accessibility improvement for walkers, joggers, cyclists and even wheelchairs. Growing up here, there was a patchwork of trails that criss-crossed and evolved with erosion after any given storm. The new one is a nod to better planning and water management practices.
The San Elijo Lagoon Project
Many, many years in the making, and very close to completion, this project involved the cooperation of numerous locals, including landowners, Encinitas Mayor Blakespear, and the City Council, Caltrans, and various environmental and conservational groups. The result: a refreshing cleanse of sea water and a much-needed revitalization for numerous birds, fish, and other wildlife. This project began with grading and removal of built up silt and wastewater, more trails, and an overall improvement to water flow between the San Elijo Creek and the Pacific Ocean. It also created a walking underpass on the Solana Beach side towards the trailhead (just across the street from Seaside). I am personally looking forward to seeing completion and congratulate all parties involved for a successful endeavor for what is easily the most costly undertaking in local memory, adding value not only to property and business, but to sightseers, visitors, naturalists, and wildlife. Note for Audubon members: many new areas for designated nesting, too.
